Definition of Cloud Storage
Cloud storage is a cloud computing model that stores data on the Internet through a cloud computing provider that manages and operates data storage as a service. Data is delivered on demand from an off-site location accessed either through public internet or a dedicated private network connection.
There are three types of cloud storage: object storage, file storage, and block storage. Each serves a unique purpose.
Benefits of Cloud Storage
Object storage: This type of storage manages data as objects. Each object includes the data in a file, along with associated metadata and a unique identifier. Objects store data in the format it arrives in and makes it possible to customise the metadata, making it easier to access and analyse. Instead of organising into files or folder hierarchies, objects are kept in repositories.
File storage: File storage saves data in a hierarchical file and folder structure. The data keeps its format, whether in the storage system or in the client where it originates and makes it easier to find and retrieve files when needed. File storage is commonly used in repositories for video, audio and other files.
Block storage: In this type of storage model, data is organised into large volumes called “blocks”. Each block represents a separate hard drive. Cloud storage providers use blocks to split large amount of data among multiple storage nodes.
Transferring your company’s files to the cloud may seem like a daunting task, but it really isn’t as overwhelming once you start the process. Here are a few benefits of moving your business’s storage from traditional hardware to cloud storage:
Cost-effective: Cloud storage providers are in charge of maintenance and upgrades; saving you money when it comes to your IT operations. You’re also saving money when it comes to power and networking, as well as staffing and overhead. The thousands of pounds you save can be used in other essential parts of your company.
Improved functionality and experience: Your data will always be there where you need it, when you need it. As a result, you can improve your company’s day-to-day functions with different cloud integrations; i.e., Media Libraries, Remote Editing Suites, Accelerated File Transfer, and AI/Machine Learning.
By using cloud storage, it can scale to support a larger, geographically dispersed workforce more easily, compared to a traditional IT environment with physical servers, licenses, storage and equipment. This saves time for your employees and improves the experience of your consumers.
Increased security: A well-architected cloud solution is far more secure than the servers managed internally by your business. Data centres and infrastructures that manage your chosen cloud storage are designed with cutting-edge security measures. Data is encrypted, equipment is always monitored and access to data is restricted.
